Introduction to Primary & Secondary Barricade Protection
Primary Barricade
Primary Barricade situations arise where persons can secure themselves in a room (with or without hostages) and are perceived to present a threat either to themselves or others.
Creating a Primary Barricade situation typically involves holding, forcing or jamming the internal thumb-turn to prevent the operation of the 'Staff key'.
All Primera Turn/Pull lock-sets are designed with an integral Primary Barricade override facility. This unique mechanism is designed to ensure Staff have 100% priority over the internal Turn/Pull at all times.
Secondary Barricade
Secondary barricade situations result from deliberate damage to or 'blocking off' of the keyway by means of foreign object, chewing gum, toilet tissue etc demanding an emergency response to the situation. Additionally, key or cylinder failure through fair wear & tear will require a secondary means of access into a room to prevent unnecessary damage to the door and avoid ward disruption.
Primera have recognised the need for continuous improvement in the mental healthcare environment and have developed a Secondary Barricade override facility with a specific approach to enable the fastest response enhancing the personal safety and wellbeing of the Service User and all others involved. This newly developed mechanism is available for both new installation projects and is also available as a retro-fit option to existing Primera locksets.

Note 2 - Standard Primera products are designed for internal applications only. For external applcations products plated to ‘Service Condition 5’ should be requested/specified.
